Three Peauxdunquians are on the lists published by the Best American … series this year!

Maurice Carlos Ruffin‘s short story, “The Children of New Orleans,” published by AGNI, has been listed as one of the 2016 “Distinguished Stories” in Best American Short Stories 2017. This is Maurice’s second-consecutive year with a story on that list.
Maurice‘s essay, “Fine Dining in New Orleans,” published by Virginia Quarterly Review, has been included on the list of “Notable Essays and Creative Non-Fiction for 2016” in Best American Essays 2017. Joining Maurice on that list are Tad Bartlett‘s “My Time With You,” published by Chautauqua, and Tom Carson‘s “True Fakes on Location,” published by The Baffler.

Peauxdunque has become a big and busy place. We may have to have long, serious discussions about gentrification soon. But in the meantime I’ll scatter here a few of the bits of good news that I can, knowing that there is so much more that I can’t contain it all–and therefore neither can this website. My apologies, but also my happiness to share the following:

Kelly Harris has been named guest poetry editor for the next issue of Bayou literary magazine. A great poet herself, she has a discerning eye, so send your poems into Bayou.
Maurice Carlos Ruffin published an essay in the Los Angeles Times regarding what the experience of Hurricane Katrina can lend to those undergoing the catastrophic flooding of Hurricane Harvey, “What Katrina taught me: A hurricane’s wounds can be treated but never healed.”
Alex Johnson will appear with Neil Ranu for the October fiction night at the Blood Jet Poetry Series, on October 18 at 8 p.m., at BJ’s, 4301 Burgundy, NOLA.
